DIY IS NOT A REQUIREMENT FOR YOUR NIGHTS AWAY PERMIT

To gain your permit doesn’t require you to put on your Super Hero Beaver costume and organise everything. Some leaders may claim that when they qualified for their Nights Away (NA) Permit they had to do everything (at the one camp), but that’s not a requirement of the NA Scheme. You are allowed to delegate / outsource activities to other leaders / parents, as long as you can talk to the specific activities and risks that the teams covered e.g. Catering: Menu, allergies, Risks, timings, equipment. As Leader-In-Charge are you bringing everything together which needs to be covered?

Quoting Scout Association regarding a Nights Away permit, “It shows that all those leading nights away events for young people within Scouting have the skills, experience and personal suitability to take young people away safely.” To gain a permit you will be assessed in four areas:

1. Technical Competence
2. Knowledge of Scout Association Rules for Nights Away
3. Child Protection
4. Personal Suitability

Use the Assessment Checklist for a Nights Away Permit (AC120990) and think about where your ‘prior experience’ can be used to support your application. Think about pulling together an evidence file with example documentation, photographs etc. For your assessment camp think about:

– Event Program (Youth and Leader Timetables) inc. wet weather options
– Roles & Responsibilities (Individuals / teams)
– Communication with Adults / Youth
– Youth Involvement
– Beaver Welfare
– Equipment & Food Lists
– Meal Plan(s) and catering arrangements
– Risk Assessments & First Aid arrangements
– Lessons Learnt and Youth Feedback

Do not expect everything at the camp to go perfectly, especially if it’s the first time you have been the Leader-in-charge. Being a Super Human is not a permit requirements. Most of the hard work is done on the lead up to the event. Everyone adapts the program as things change e.g. an event over-runs because everyone is having so much fun. For us the key assessment requirement is how you bring everything together e.g. the Glue.

THE DAMBOREE PASSPORT – so many possible badge requirements met

Firstly a credit to Angela Haynes, who has inspired us to get the crayons out, and do a branded passport for Beavers. Thanks Angela, so please when you download it, remember to thank Angela on our FaceBook Group and Page.

It’s editable in Microsoft Word, however other office packages are available but may require more fiddling.

Camping and residential events are an important part of the Beaver Program. Have you thought about how you could maximise the Beaver achievements at the Damboree. We have created a Damboree Passport you could adapt for your event. Here is a list of possible requirements met by one overnight event:

Damboree Steamrollers Onwards!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the Damboree virtual office, our team hoodies have arrived and they are amazing Ben K. for arranging them. the second batch of blue badges has shipped and another 1000 are on route ready for the eager Beavers to earn.

More Numbers!

Our pet statics dude has been crunching some numbers to give an idea of where Damboree events are happening, which are the top 10 counties or regions, you know, to give County Commissioners bragging rights.

Damboree On Tour!

We’ve also put a calendar on the website so you know when we are out and about visiting Damboree Events. The calendar can be found <here>. As we’re small team of around 13 we are unable to cover the UK in it’s entirety, or the couple of overseas Damboree Events, although Cyprus was very appealing, couldn’t get permission from Mrs B.

If you would like a member of the team to drop in for tea and cake we’ll do our best, but all our trips are subject to our usual scouting commitments, and spousal permission (where applicable). The areas we can cover are:

Andy T – Scotland (yes all of it).
Stuart – MK/Bucks/Beds/N’hants.
Sam – Dorest/Devon.

BADGE ORDERS!

To date we’ve received over 70 orders for badges, and our badge partner Karuna Badges has been working hard to get those badges out the door to participants. Please be aware that badges are being done in runs of 500-1000 so there may be a slight delay as one batch is shipped, and another is on route from their suppliers.  if you are ordering badges make sure you do so in plenty of time for your event to ensure you have them to award and reward your campers.

Badges can be ordered from our online form order early, order often!

We’ll be mailing out to the registration list in the coming days to ensure clarity over the ordering process, as there may have been come minor confusion around the badge ordering process.

Permit Application Challenges…

The Damboree Team, mainly Andy Sissons, have received a number of communiques regarding some leaders facing issues, or local rules, to them applying for their permits.  Damboree Team will offer advice, provide appropriate links to rules, POR, Factsheets, and if  point them to Info Centre.

We’re here to support Beaver leaders getting their campsite permits, so that their sections can camp anytime they want to.

1st Run Done, 2nd En Route, Badges Ahoy!

The first print run of Blues (500) and Silverr(100) have now shipped,  which was the initial run of Damboree Badges. Our Badge Partner Karuna Badges has sourced the next run and they will start to ship once they have arrived.

We’re whelmed by the interest, with over 60 orders placed for over 1700 badges, which translates to, currently, 1400 Beavers set to earn their Damboree Badge, by their leaders getting them under canvas, and camping. #Awesome

The Damboree Team would like to re-iterate our profound pleasure at how this mad-cap idea is rolling along. What started as a “Big Mouth Bravado” statement from Andy Sissions, has really captured the imagination of so many supporters, not just the leaders, but supporting GSLs, District Commissioners, County Commissioners and the Nights Away Assessors.
